Grain capacity is the total amount of dissolved hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) a water softener's cation resin bed can capture before it becomes chemically exhausted and must regenerate with salt. One "grain" of hardness equals 1/7,000th of a pound (approximately 64.8 milligrams) of dissolved calcium carbonate.
How Many Grain Water Softener Do I Need?
To determine how many grains your home needs between weekly salt cycles, follow the Water Quality Association (WQA) formula:
Daily Gallons (People × 75) × Hardness in GPG × 7 Days × 1.20 Reserve = Required Grains
For example, a family of 4 with 10 GPG hardness: 300 gal × 10 GPG × 7 days × 1.20 = 25,200 Grains. You size up to the next standard nominal capacity: a 32,000 grain system.
